Response to Ubuntu TV by spiceofdesign Response to Ubuntu TV by spiceofdesign
For those that hadn't heard, Canonical has been developing Ubuntu TV: [link] It does look really cool in terms of features and the layout seems solid enough. However the actual skin seems to be the ugliest thing ever, especially that background. So taking a leaf from BBC iPlayer's book I designed this as a better alternative

I like it, but it's not unity consistant an even looks metro.

It's not meant to be unity consistent - If you hadn't noticed, unity sucks when it comes to appearance, which I do state in the description. I think the functionality and layout is generally OK, but the styling is awful.

Beautiful as usual =)

I posted a link to this page #ubuntu-tv freenode channel and the only criticism was that the indicator bar would be too small for a display 10ft away, which I kinda have to agree with.

Oh and in addition I don't know why it didn't occur to me to use Ubuntu condensed, in this situation where space is limited. Oh well

I was thinking of increasing it and having the title bit integrated as well. Also, this is only 720p, rather than a full 1080p, so it would be need to be even large on that.

Hell yes! It's a TV, not a computer, it just cannot use the same Unity as on a desktop. The mockup is perfect, good job.

Why don't the people who actually do this for a living and were designated to design this do something as cool? Or even something as clear and useful. Besides a good portion of apple and google, people seem to enjoy designing ugly retro interfaces *cough*gnome-shell/unity*cough*.
I wish it would look like this but sadly it'll look as it is, like unity.
Though I have to say, I think the segregation of the status icons is a bit jarring for me. Good work. And mega quick!

PS
Sherlock is amazing, its so hyper but you get more in one episode than the entire boxset of lost.

Thanks, I agree - glossy interfaces haven't been popular for a long time. Even Microsoft has ditched them for windows 8 (which looks amazing)

I love google's redesign. If I could apply it to an OS I would. I have to say I don't like the Metro UI (windows 8), I kind of get a mental block with the irregular sizing/shapes and erratic colouring. I still prefer good old gnome 2.x with some kind of modded elementary theme. Microsoft though, are smartening up considering they were the ones to lag behind and stick with unfashionable content. I am really surprised they've gone full steam ahead with this inventive style.
