Rebound of Pantheon Greeter by spiceofdesign Rebound of Pantheon Greeter by spiceofdesign
This is a rebound of DanRabbit's Pantheon Greeter: [link]

Whilst I liked the look, I felt that certain alignment and spacing issues could be fixed, particularly around the login box.

The background can be found here: [link]

EDIT
- Reduced padding to elementary standard
- Changed guest session icon
- Blurred and darkened wallpaper

The official time is "When it is ready", although I think they could at least have provided an alpha or beta image by now. One problem is they keep nearly getting to release then either something major breaks or they decide to rewrite a large user interface aspect, eg the window manager, which keeps pushing back the release.

I like almost everything except for the avatar for the non-selected user, and the guest session. I think it would look a lot better, and more clean, if the avatar was only displayed for a selected user. Also, for guest session, I think that you should get rid of the avatar completely. As well as place some sort of small icon associated with the word "guest" next to "Guest Session" -- as it is done next to "Daniel Fore."

Yeah, generally it feels more comfortable to see more padding on the bottom if the padding isn't going to be equal. Even if the space is technically equal above the gear and below the text input box, the breadth of the white space above along with the lowered 'Welcome' makes it feel like there's a lot more.

Aside from that, I can see how this more centered alignment could work in more scenarios (large screens). This one feels more like a carousel facing you directly than Dan's (his seems to be emerging from a different vanishing point). I think they're both pretty good, although I'm personally into auto-hiding the user pictures if we're wrapping so much perspective into it.

To be honest, I kinda' like the current greeter more than the new mockups. It feels simpler to me since the alignment and spacing is very predictable. Then again, that could be seen as boring and monotonous by some. Just putting in my two cents- thanks for the awesome contributions.

I liked DanRabbits more, I don't like that the textbox and avatar are so near the buttom!

Very good work though! :D

The avatars on the background don't look so good at the edges, maybe give it a border and shadow?

yeah, sounds good. And like I said before, could you somehow drop the white box, or make it very transparent ( 20 % or so ) ?

I don't think it would look as good with the transparency. I'd have to see it though.

I suggest to somehow drop that white box ... I know you have to show the user somehow that the thing is focused, but I really just like a clean look, if you select a user, you not get that white box...

The update looks really slick! Padding is much better and the Elementary logo for the guest session is a perfect fit! Really good that you darkened and blurred the wallpaper, since the text is white it can get pretty hard to read if you have chosen a really bright wallpaper. I hope that pantheon-greeter will get the same (or maybe it already has?) "wallpaper switch"-functionality that unity-greeter features, it will look really good :P

They will probably base it off the unity-greeter, since it has a pretty similar layout and functionality.

I preferred the smaller padding around the content in the login box on DanRabbit's mockup but you positioned the login form better. I don't know about the profile pictures, if you have a lot of accounts then it will definitely be faster to navigate to yours but it's less clutter without them.

Ah, putting the login button next to the entry seems kind of obvious looking at it haha.

I think your padding is a little excessive though. Dialog padding is always 12px. I'm not sure why we'd break that here.

Also I'm not sure that actual name only is entirely reliable. We could have two users "Fernando Alvarenga" with the same login image (one is jr. one is sr.) So while I think it's important to display the actual name, I'm not certain it's entirely reliable to where we don't need user name at all.

With the text, I don't think it's a good idea to remove the shadowing. What if the wallpaper was very light in color? Also that's the reason I blurred and darkened the wallpaper.

I prefer the extra padding because otherwise it seems lost of a big monitor. It also allows a little more breathing space for the username.

That example seems and incredibly niche case. The chance of people having the same name isn't that low, but them using the same actual name, wallpaper and avatar is very low. Displaying both seems a little clunky and redundant, especially if they are nearly the same.

The shadowing is still there (albeit at a low opacity), and I agree there needs to be more contrast with a blurred and darkened wallpaper.

Hrm, I think I'll stick with the regular padding here :p

Yea that's a good point about the wallpaper as well. I think you got me on this one. I'm convinced.

I don't like the avatars in the non-selected users, because it forces to have an "unknown" avatar in guest user, and it is ugly (at least for me), and it's very difficult to find (or make) a very good unknown picture that's match with the greeter.

Selected user box, simply perfect.

Dan was using the standard spacing, 12px. Also the background should be darkened and blurred, then any wallpaper should look fine with the white clock.

I prefer your mockup, but I don't like the Guest Session avatar, maybe you could even ditch the guest avatar.

Also, speaking of alignment, the position of Dan's cog icon looks a little better, it looks aligned with right edge of the password box (because his box has less right border padding, it wouldn't work for yours). But overall I think yours looks more polished.

I like it ! I'm just wondering, if there shall be a "login wallpaper", or one that will be used for both the desktop and the login.

Because the white writing (date and time) may not constrat enough with most wallpapers, such as, for example, Jupiter's one (the clouds etc...).

I think this should be considered !

I think it will use the wallpaper of the currently selected user. You could use the average colour of the wallpaper to determine whether it used light or dark text.
